The Spectral Geologist

The Spectral Geologist (TSG™), developed by the CSIRO,  is the industry standard tool for geological analysis of spectral reflectance data of minerals, rocks and soils, including drill cores and chips.

Since it first came out, TSG™ has revolutionized the way that geological spectral data are processed and analysed. Spectra are not treated in isolation, but as a project data set with all your ancillary project data combined and organised together in the TSG file along with your spectral data.

This means that your spectral data can easily be analysed in the context of your project geology, and contribute directly to understanding the alteration and mineralisation relationships in the project area.

Most importantly for geoscientists, the TSG interface has been designed specifically for geological applications. The analysis techniques available in TSG focus on the applications of using spectral data for targeting mineralisation, including methods for mapping mineral assemblages, applications of spectral parameters for automated logging/mapping, deposit characterisation and developing vectors to mineralisation.

The elegant simplicity of TSG is reflected in the structure of the package which revolves around the different TSG Screens, each of which allows users to look at their data differently.  From the Spectrum screen, where individual spectra can be studied, to the Log and Scatter screens where you can view down hole overviews or spatial plots/sections containing thousands of spectra and associated data.

How to Install TSG 7:

For installation of Viewer, or Node Locked or Trial Licences:

  1. Download the software

  2. Run set up file to Install on your PC

  3. Start up TSG, a registration window will pop up

  4. Select which TSG version you need from the “Version” drop down list at the top of the registration window (i.e. Viewer or Trial TSG Licence)

  5. Select either Computer or BIOS to lock the licence to your computer

  6. Fill in your user name and organisation, ignore all other fields as these are not needed at this stage.

  7. Click “request…” which will generate an email to us with the details we need to create the licence file

  8.  We will then send you a licence file and further instructions.

TSG Demonstration Data Sets supplied by AusSpec

There are two demonstration datasets here to assist you in getting started with TSG and becoming familiar with some of the functions. The first is called WA_Regolith, this is a fairly small dataset of only 66 samples but is useful for exploring most of the main TSG functions.

Also available is the demonstration dataset Fosterville. Fosterville is a much larger dataset of around 761 samples which has been included for the principal purpose of demonstrating the powerful features available in the Scatter plot screen.

WA Regolith Example spectra

Yandal-Wiluna example, 60 spectra from deeply weathered hole, includes Au and depth data)

Fosterville Victoria spectra

(~760 spectra of grade control samples from Fosterville, includes coordinate data and Au grades)
