Regolith Logging

The regolith logging techniques, developed by AusSpec are leading to greater confidence in being able to recognise basement contacts and the interpretation of geochemical results in areas of intense and deep weathering. The techniques focus on being able to identify different kaolinite crystallinities and smectite proportions found in transported and basement sequences, which is used to:

  • Quickly build up detailed logs of regolith profiles using PIMA, ASD or HyChips
  • Optimize drilling depth as data from the drilling is logged allowing for more effective geochemical sampling
  • Analyse pulps or cuttings from previously completed drilling projects to help ascertain the reliability of associated geochemical data sets
  • Position the basement contact on site while drilling is being conducted
  • Gauge the level of maturity of various horizons in a profile

The technique is:

  • Consistent and fast

  • Independent of region

  • Independent of basement lithology

  • Field or lab based
